What are the things that you think makes someone stand out for Best JotW? What criteria do you think the Sithies judges should be looking for in nominations?

A good story, plain and simple. The beauty of the JotW is that it can host anything from character backstory to stream of consciousness rambling. If it's good, it's good, regardless of the form.

Even then, it's not always about the story itself. Some of the best JotWs have so simple a story, but their's something really beautiful in the way it's told: For example, last year's award winner, Death Hold Blue by Jago Pulastra. Really very short, and simple, story, but an incredible style and execution.
This one truly is the hardest of all the awards to categorise. I suppose, it's got to generate a response from you, a big, and positive response. If you love reading it, if it gives you a thrill, if you reach the end and kind of wish there was more? That's a good JotW.

It is, above and beyond all, something that draws the reader in...same as any story. If its engaging, something that has you waiting for the next installment? As Dav said, it has to be able to generate a response from the reader....make you want more. Its not about length, either. I agree with Dav on that...it could be a short story, or it can be an entire novel....either way, it is the way it pulls you in, and keeps you there.
