The Major had grown more frustrated. Not only had he not been able to observe what the trainers were doing here better, it seemed that his presence was hindering training. Everyone kept looking at him, they were nervous he was judging them. He had told the leaders that he was just watching, but the message was getting lost someplace. He would have to think of something else if he was going to get the information he was after.

The Major had gotten creative. He published his itinerary but then would show up at different locations around the training school. He felt bad at their fear and nervousness. Things were going well here, the reputations of others in older Empires seemed to still be in play. He praised the work being done, asked clarification questions, and offered advice. He was very happy as people started to relax around him.

As the staff relaxed, the Major learned more and more. The endurance training here was leaps beyond what was taking place on Carida, though with the latter system's gravity that was to be expected. He made notes of instructors that would be great guest lecturers and suggested ones from Carida that could contribute here. The trip had been very successful.

This was a unique experience. This was Akulas Ecklund's first stand-alone mission. Yes, as a cadet commander, she had lead exercises and training missions, but this was the first one that was real. The Grand Moff had been impressed with what Ecklund had accomplished in such a short time and wanted to see what the young cadet could do with extra pressure. This mission was one that a cadet squad was more than capable to handle. Command the shuttle to pick up the Major, meet him, provide security on a friendly world, and make sure he departs in two days' time. It was simple, but still, she was nervous. She had trained extensively with the SE-44C, both live fire, and stun training, but right now it felt much heavier than ever on her hip. The Grand Moff had specifically requested that Akulas was issued the pistol. She said it was a symbol of command. The other cadets in her squad had been issued the F-11D. More than ever Cadet Ecklund wished that she had been given one. She thought about how she got to this point in her life. She was a leader, not by choice, it just came naturally to her. It always had. The burdens of leadership were not things she desired, but they always found her, and her sense of duty wouldn't let her turn it down. None of this doubt showed on her face. She was, like always a stone, face locked with a look of confidence. The Shuttle made its descent. and she stood up to address her men. All right Lothcats! Look alive. We all have our briefing. This mission may be simple, but it is important. Trust your training and squad. And have fun out there. The squad of 6 all put on their helmets. These didn't have masks like full trooper helmets. Their armor was plate pieces instead of the full body. They marched off the shuttle's ramp and went to check in with the deck officer.

The deck officer checked them in and assigned them a speeder. Akulas assigned one cadet to drive while she navigated using her data pad. The Major's new strategy was making tracking him down very difficult. His published itinerary never matched where he was and people in those places hadn't seen him. This frustrated the Cadet greatly. She was now forced to reason out where he could possibly be. She was a terrific leader, and a quick learner. He never failed the same way twice and learned from everything. She was not a tactical savant. She couldn't recognize patterns right away in the Majors play and she was having to slowly work things out. Sometimes she would work it out, but would arrive too late. A full day had passed and the unit had yet to find their objective. She had most of tomorrow to do that leaving enough time to get them all back to the shuttle.

Every stop they had made before they had given the comm frequency with orders to contact her if the Major appeared. Major Ricean had been an instructor of hers multiple times in the past, she liked him and he was very proud of her. In this situation, that made her nervous. If the Major found out she was the one to come collect him, he was very likely to turn this into a training exercise. He would try to hide and make her track him down in a large unfamiliar city. She was already starting to operate like this was the case. It made the next 24 hours very important.

Under the newly promoted Provost, Grand Marshal Thomas Zahn, the Corulag Academy would be kicked into high gear. Some wondered if this promotion was to sidestep Zahn, but the sincerity behind this elevation was well known. Nicademus wanted Zahn to provide a new generation of Stormtroopers for the future of the military. After all, he was a Grand Marshal, his life was the army. These legions would one day, hopefully, become the cream of the military under his son, Octavian. In fact, a few of the units, recommended to High Command, made up the 101st Shock Company, which served under the command of the Crown Prince during missions that took him beyond the boundaries of the Empire. These personnel were made of the young, the educated, and the proven of the Academy.

The weeks and months passed by under Grand Marshal Zahn's tenure as Provost of the Corulag Academy. Stormtrooper Cadets were pushed to their limits and then beyond. The Commanders and General's within the 20th Army made sure the Cadets were put through their paces and trained on dozens of different simulations. Cadet's that couldn't keep up were flunked out of the Academy and sent home or transferred to the Carida Academy. With Zahn in charge, he was not going to concede the top spot to Standash's Academy any longer. While they were not enemies or necessarily rivals, Zahn had a reputation to uphold. He also had plans to work toward. Only the best of the best units had made it over to the 101st Shock Company under the direct command of the Crown Prince. Their service would prove the Corulag Academy's superior training and prove the Grand Marshal's worth for future promotion

Recruitment and service within the Imperial Military was a mark of prestige within the First Order. The Stormtrooper Corps were the mainline military force with which Order and Peace were brought to the Galaxy. No longer did the Imperial Army Corps exist as the cannon fodder of Imperial Expansion. Instead, Soldiers received proper and expansive training, equipped with proper armour and gear. While the Commissariats initial training regime served as a baseline, Zahn had diverged the Corulag academy's training program toward improvement.
But beneath the guise of his regular training program, Zahn set up and got to work on the early stages of Project: HOPLITE. While the Empire had the Imperial Knights, the Knights of Ren, and this new Inquisitorius, Zahn did not particularly trust any of them. History had shown Force Users were prone toward self-destruction once they got close enough to the Throne. Taking with them great Empires.
The day would come when one group or another would jeopardise the existence of the First Order. When that day came, he wanted to be prepared. To that end, Project: HOPLITE was meant to create a unit of super-soldiers capable of going hand-to-hand with any of these Force Users. Viable candidates would be a very short list, but the advantage of the Empire's current recruitment rate mean that it would not be overly hard to find those whom he could mould. To achieve this goal, he would use Force Users of his own

Project: HOPLITE Zahn hand picked a small staff consisting of a pair of his top Generals and a handful of Researchers and Administrators. Lab and Primary Training facilities were set aside under the guise of a research project for future leaders. It was an innocuous enough program aim that it wouldn't raise too many eyebrows when a pair of Generals and researchers went scouting the Empire's various recruitment centres and academies. Thanks to the amassed knowledge of the Empire, they knew a handful of items to take with them and test candidates for Force Sensitivity. While the Generals took one team touring the First Order, the rest of the team got to work testing Recruits at the Corulag Academy. The programs initial target starting group number was 10. With this small a group, 5 would hopefully survive to make up the first gen of the HOPLITE program, while the other 5 would act as sacrificial losses. Dangerously experimental and invasive procedures were going to be performed on the subjects. It was foolish to think every one would survive the treatments

Project: HOPLITE As recruitment work began across the various Imperial Academies, construction work continued on the training facilities beneath the surface. Given the projects secretive nature, the HOPLITE program wouldn't be running anything above ground until Zahn was certain of success. He also did not want to risk discovery, lest another try copy his work. As the work underground was underway, researchers were busy at work on the surface within the secrecy of the lab building. Chemical compounds and various cybernetic improvements were developed and produced to be administered to those lucky candidates that would qualify. The first Generation recruits would be arriving soon

Like his fellow Stormtrooper Captains across the Empire, Captain Mithras arrived to his target. The Corulag Academy was one of the four primary Training Academies across the Empire. And just like the others, Mithras had come to observe and report upon the operation of the Academy. Unlike the other locations, Corulag was being personally overseen by Grand Marshal Thomas Zahn, a man whom had garnered a great deal of respect from his peers and superiors. Mithras would be remiss to deny he did not look up to the man. But his mission here was to be critical of the training techniques employed to ensure that the best Stormtroopers were produced to enforce peace and prosperity forthe Empire

Project: HOPLITE The search had taken some time, but finally the first 10 candidates for the HOPLITE program had been found and assembled on Corulag. Any hope there would be some relief or pause for them to catch their breath was quickly dispelled when they were ushered into the facility and run through a battery of different tests. From bloods, to CT scans and training exercises, the new recruits were tested and checked for their suitability to proceed on. Additional candidates had been ear-marked in case any of the initial class were found to be wanting. But failing that, they could be recruited later on for the next generation.
As the days turned into weeks, the group was split into 2 fire teams based on their performance and ability to work together. Base line results were recorded to determine where their performance started out before the first round of treatments was administered. Cybernetic implants and chemical cocktails constituted the first round of alterations. Subtle changes were made to their genetics, increasing certain physical attributes and capabilities. Given the mild changes they were making in the first round of testing, none of the candidates had any overly adverse reactions. The testing rounds showed improvement, with the medical teams getting the go ahead to proceed with round 2 of experimentation Zahn kept a close watch over the HOPLITE program, receiving daily reports and updates, whilst also overseeing the regular operations of the Academy. A task which involved keeping a watch over Captain Mithras. Since Magnus' ascension to First Commissar, the man had been quite busy getting his department back into line and operations. The Stormtrooper Captain's arrival and presence certainly forebode a review of Corulag and a visit by the First Commissar once the review was complete. Something Zahn was not looking forward to. He had a respect for the Commissariat's work, but he did have some disagreements with their approach to Stormtrooper training. He also had no interest in sharing the existence of the HOPLITE program with Magnus. He didn't need any unnecessary interference or someone trying to claim credit for it

The Pacificator had dropped out of hyperspace over Corulag, before the Pax Aeterna had departed from the Mobile Command Center and headed down to the training Academy on the edge of Curamelle. Magnus' impending arrival had already been signalled to the Grand Marshal a couple days beforehand by Captain Mithras when the initial review had been completed. As such, his arrival was just that little bit more smoother with Orbital Control quickly approving his approach request and the Academy's traffic control guiding the Pax Aeterna down to a specially set aside landing pad where Mithras was waiting alongside a contingent of the Academy's best students as an honour guard. At the far end of the pad Grand Marshal Zahn was standing in his dress uniform.
Brigatea - who had arrived back to Coruscant a few days prior from her post on Iridonia - guided the Upsilon down onto the landing pad. The upper wings were sliding down into their landed position as the landing ramp lowered and Magnus strode down. His long coat flapped in the wind, revealing the signature shape of the Commissar's Sidearm which had been distributed out since Magnus took office. As First Commissar, he intended the sidearms to strike fear into the hearts of renegades and rebels. Something that would come in time.
Brigatea finished the power down sequence and soon joined Magnus at the foot of the ramp, before he strode forward along the line of students to where Zahn was waiting

Project: HOPLITE The weeks and months passed by as new experimental treatments and enhancements were developed by the Research teams. The pair of Fire Teams continued to undertake their basic training, information about which was compared against the regular recruits to see just how far advanced they were. Soon, however, Zahn would have to move onto the next phase of the project: finding and acquiring a Force User to train the recruits to use their powers but also how to fight another Force User Zahn had been in fact been reviewing a list of potential candidates as he stood waiting for Magnus' arrival. Clandestine sources had provided him bio's on a number of Force Users across the Galaxy whom had been identified as possessing skills that would be of interest to the Program. He just had to finish reviewing the list and decide on a candidate to approach. It was a task he felt no great love for, all things considered. But it was a necessary evil he would have to suffer for the greater good.
He quickly shut off the datapad and slid it back into his pocket as soon as Magnus and Brigatea started to make their way along the assembled group of students toward him. He did not intend to give anything away about the Program, and he was not interested in losing any leads to the Commissariat. Once he was ready for them to find out, would be when they found out what he was doing.
He smiled politely and inclined his head to MagnusFirst Commissar Ambrose and the famed Lord Commissar Brigatea... Welcome to the Corulag Military Academy. It is my pleasure to host guests such as yourselves... A lie, to be certain, but etiquette demanded he attempt to play nice

Magnus made note of the Datapad that was in Zahn's hands in one moment and gone in the next. Not by itself an unusual thing. He spared it little thought beyond its sudden lack of existence as he came to a stop close to the Grand Marshal. He inclined his own head in returned greeting, while Brigatea gave a more pronounced bow from her waist before straitening up again and assuming an attention stance. Thus the formalities began Provost Zahn, it is an honour. Your exploits as a Grand Marshal are quite legendary and certainly contributory to your posting here on Corulag... I promise our visit will not disrupt your Academy and Schedule overly much... A lie of his own. For some of what Capain Mithras had reported required much attention and addressing with the Provost whom had allowed, or encouraged, such behaviour. Corulag would be a signal to the other Academy's of what Magnus had in store for them. Certainly the Commissariat had little actual power and authority in such matters from a direct perspective. But their job was to oversee training programs and propaganda for the masses to ensure loyalty. Programs which were carefully constructed and produced to maximise their gains.
Deviation from which could have disastrous effects or negative impact over time. And which he, as First Commissar, would be answerable for long before those beneath his command or those more directly culpable would be punished

Magnus' comments and jabs were intended to get a rise out of him. They would have worked on Officer's much greener in the art of politics than he was. His expression remained impassive and gave little away. This visit was bound to be anything but short and unobtrusive. The First Commissar didn't make a personal visit if nothing was wrong in their opinion. Thus it was a good thing Zahn had planned ahead for this and shifted his schedule to ensure his availability was high It's Grand Marshal still First Commissar Ambrose, and you would do well to remember that. The twentieth army resides here, serving as support staff and trainers under my command still... As far as your visit is concerned, I have made preparations to ensure I will be available as required... But first we should show you to your accommodations here within the Academy. Perhaps Lord Commissar Brigatea might also grace the students with a demonstration of her skills while you are here... Zahn turned and lead the way into the Academy proper to head toward the living quarters

A harmless little prod, but one Zahn had pushed back against with a very subtle threat. One which Magnus took note of. He would have to be very careful how much he pushed his luck, lest he find himself summarily executed by the Grand Marshal. He inclined his head in response to Zahn's comments, before following along with Brigatea toward their temporary accommodations Such a demonstration could easily be setup. I'm sure the Lord Commissar would delight in showing what happens to traitors and deviants...
Yes, First Commissar... Her response was spoken with a cold detachment, which only added to the mystery and fear that surrounded her.
Much of the rest of the trip to their quarters passed in silence. With their belongings dropped off, Magnus followed Zahn up to the Provost Office in the Academy, where he took a seat in front of the desk and pulled out his datapad to review his notes from Mithras. There were a number of items to review, and so he figured there was no time to waste I think it best we jump into things. There are a number of points I'd like to review, starting with some of the training changes you've made here, and finishing with what is going on in building delta twenty two...

Project: HOPLITE A couple days had passed since Zahn had visited Idris Hale upon Nar Shaddaa and recruited for the HOPLITE program. He'd cleaned up a bit to his former glory, if for no other reason than that the pay he was getting at least deserved that much effort. But where the Jedi Emblem had once been upon his pauldron, it was now replaced by the emblem of the HOPLITE program. It served as a quick and easy visual identifier for security that he was part of the program and thus meant to be there. But it also marked him as a friendly should anything arise where he was required to be outside the HOPLITE complex.
But short of an emergency, Idris was going to be very busy as he got started training the initial group of 10 recruits for the HOPLITE program. Without any prior experience and knowledge of the Force, he had an uphill battle ahead of him. He needed to teach them how to focus their senses and touch the Force properly, so they could bend it to their uses. He let out a sigh and began his first lesson with the recruits even as the Research Teams were coming up with new and more advanced implants and improvements for their own parts of the program Zahn moved behind his desk and took a seat as they arrived there after dropping Brigatea off to undoubtedly meet up with Captain Mithras. But where he had expected some more subtlety, Magnus got straight to the point of asking about what he wanted to know. Neither of the main points that Magnus wanted to address surprised him. But if Magnus truly expected to just be given everything he wanted by asking, he'd be sorely mistakenVery bold First Commissar Ambrose... Very bold indeed... But I'm afraid if you thought you could walk in here and take command, you will be disappointed. You are not the Emperor's Sister, nor do you hold any royal relation or power. You want to discuss my training methods? by all means, such matters fall within your purview. However, that is where your authority ends. What happens elsewhere at this Academy, including building delta twenty two, is none of your concern. Any violation will result in you being shot or arrested. Do I make myself clear?

Magnus stared at the Grand Marshal incredulously as the veneer of formality was quickly dropped in exchange for a rather blatant threat against his person. A threat which he was certain Zahn would follow through on, given his very recent reminder of the 20th Army's positioning here. He just needed to make sure he didn't give the man too much reason to enact such means, but also devise some fail-safes to ensure fingers were not quick to pull triggers Is that a threat Grand Marshal? I am the First Commissar of the First Order, entrusted by our Emperor to carry out duties pertaining to the continued education of our citizens and soldiers. Education that ensures loyalty to the Empire and the ideals of Neo-Imperialism, so that we do not suffer from treason and disloyalty by well trained units defecting to enemy combatants. A mission that you may well be hampering by restricting mine and the Commissariat's access to places within this Academy...
