The Lucrehulk drifted slowly in orbit. The last of the surface to orbit transports had already unloaded its cargo & returned to its docking station inside the massive ship's cargo holds, however the cargo unit it had carried up was still being secured in preparation for departure. Kinyen was one of many worlds that MandalMine (a member corporation of the MandalMine Collective) maintained farm operations on. The Lucrehulk was just one of the multitude of Cargo-Variant models used by Blue Shift Transportation (a member corporation of the MandalMine Collective) to transport goods across the known galaxy. The Cargo-Variant design doesn't have any weapon emplacements nor is it very fast in real space, it does however, have impressing shields & hyperdrives.
It like all the others of its kind was primarily automated (using droids & control commands issued remotely from MMC command) & had a crew of under a hundred. The Lucrehulk doesn't even have a proper name, just a system ID number: LHCV-FRB920. LHCV-FRB920 has exactly one thing of note about it. It was currently roughly halfway through a list of eight planets that had been growing an experiential crop. The crop, if successful, could increase net gain from the food producing sites by nearly two percent.
It was for that reason that a single strike-class medium cruiser from Starfire Security (a member corporation of the MandalMine Collective) had been assigned to escort LHCV-FRB920. The cruiser, SCMC-387 "Happy Thoughts", was currently drifting in a parallel path to the much larger Lucrehulk.

Four ships exited hyperspace dangerously close to the gravity well of the planet. One Interceptor-class frigate and three Guardian-class light cruisers. All four of the ships immediately powered their shields and started to cycle power through their weapons. The small flotillas sensors scanned the system and the ships near the planet, plotting an intercept course soon after.
Gorg stood on the bridge of the Interceptor looking at the ships in orbit the cruiser would be a problem.
"Launch all fightersss, target the Cruissser and destroy it. Land the Guardiansss on the transport and deploy troopsss. Bring me my treasssure!"
The imposing Slith hissed his orders as he slithered back to his console.
The Guardians released their TIE fighters from their racks and soon thirty of them were swarming towards the enemy Cruiser. The Guardians themselves began to move away from the fight to try and get around the escort and to the main prize, the Lucrehulk. The Interceptor was heading straight for the enemy escort, soon to be in weapons range.

The sensor officer on the Happy Thoughts reacted nearly immediately to the four ships jumping into the system so close. She triggered the standby alert linking the ship to MMC Operations Control. That by itself wouldn't mean that one of the coordination teams, or more likely in this case, a single coordination officer, would step in to command the ship. It did however make it much more likely as it would flag the current operation as needing attention as opposed to the vast number of other operations currently going on that could be handled perfectly well with just the on-board crew. When the new ships began powering up their shields & weapons, the sensor officer hit the primary alert. The chances that they wouldn't have at least a coordination officer dropped to nearly zero.
MMC was usual in regards to most military groups in that it didn't like to put talented officers in the way of harm, such as on the bridge of a warship. Unlike most military groups, MMC recognized that some people who had great skill in commanding ships & general tactics, had a very poor grasp of over-arching strategy. That was why most of the crew on the company ships, military or otherwise, had a junior crew. Once a crew member possessed the recognized level of skill, they were transferred to one of the several heavily fortified Operations Control stations. From there they would remotely direct various battles & skirmishes. As the officer grows in skill, the threat assessment teams would assign more challenging engagements. This system had the benefit of allowing the most experienced & most suited officers to command in any engagement needed, instead of being suck in a single location. The main drawback of the system was that if too many engagements were happening at once, it would fall to the relatively inexperienced crew to handle the situation.
-Operations Command SSNB-SCMC-387 "Happy Thoughts", this is Operations Command. My team is now taking control of the engagement, confirm.
-Captain Fuliyard. Operations Command, this is SSNB-SCMC-387 "Happy Thoughts". Control confirmed.
With that exchange, most of the ships systems were rerouted to the private Holonet system owned & maintained by MMC. The shields of the Strike class had been on before the other ships arrived, but at minimal levels, they were quickly powered up to full strength. The weapon systems on the Happy Thoughts were primarily suited for anti-fighter work as the mission hadn't expected to run afoul of any heavy attacks. The point defence systems began to power up as the TIE fighters began to break free from their carrier ships. The TIEs & the Guardians would be fairly vulnerable to the massed light fire, but the Interceptor would likely be a much tougher target to crack. Unfortunately the enemy must have know this as the Interceptor was escorting the TIEs into the fight while the Guardians tried to loop around toward the transport. Fortunately, the Lucrehulk had already closed the cargo bay doors meaning that the Guardians would have to either blast or cut their way into the ship. Unfortunately, the Lucrehulk couldn't jump away until its cargo was secure, & the Happy Thoughts couldn't leave the local installation unguarded against the pirates. This meant that running wasn't a valid option, on the other hand a Rapid Response Fleet was already being dispatched to the system, one way or another the fight would be over in ten minutes. The weapons on the Happy Thoughts would be charged before the enemy would cross into range, so it was time for the last warning.
-Operations Command A warning to the captain of the inbound fleet. Stand down or be fired upon. This is your only warning.

The ships of the small pirate flotilla did not change course when they received the communication from the enemy cruiser. Gorg expected as much, it was not his first raid on a ship that could fight back. They always issued a warning and Gorg never listened, never stopped and never lost.
"Continue with the plan, fire when ready!"
The Guardians were half way around their looping course, hoping to stay out of range of the cruisers weapons before dashing towards the transport ship. The transport dwarfed every other ship orbit, it almost felt wrong that it needed protection against such knats. The TIE fighters, the smallest ships currently in orbit, were closing fast on the cruiser in attack speed. They were now flying in a very loose cloud, to make the weapons on the cruiser work as hard as possible to hit them. Following them was the Interceptor which opened up with all her turbolasers and missile launchers. They were targeting the enemy weapons systems to help the fighters distract the enemy escort cruiser.

The failure to respond was response enough to the Coordination Officer. The Interceptor reached firing range at roughly the same time as the Happy Thoughts, meaning that the two began firing at nearly the same time. MMC ship directed most of its fire on the TIE fighters. A 'standard' configuration Strike-class did have some point-defence weapons, but not enough for a dedicated anti-fighter role. The Happy Thoughts on the other hand had been refitted at some point, replacing half of its ten turbolaser batteries & twenty independent turbolaser cannons with point-defence weapons. This made for a veritable wave of fire launching itself from the Cruiser. Most of the fire directed at the fighters however wasn't aimed directly at the TIEs, instead it was aimed in a framing pattern to 'push' the fighters into kill zones.
The remained of the cruiser's weapons, being too large to effectively target the TIEs, returned fire on the Interceptor. Even stripped down to an anti-fighter role, the cruiser still packed a serious punch. The opening salvo was the ten ion cannons, seven of which had line of fire on the pirate ship. A moment later the three turbolaser batteries that could fire on the Interceptor did so, hopefully the ion cannons would weaken the enemy shields enough for the turbolasers to crack them. An instant after that the 2 independent turbolaser cannons fired.
The Coordination Officer wasn't too worried about losses yet. The Strike-class was more than twice the length of the Interceptor, & several times the mass. The real annoying part of the fight would be the Guardians, as they were small enough that the turbolasers would have trouble hitting them & large enough that the point-defence weapons would take time to chew through their defences. At the moment though, the smaller ships were focusing on the cargo ship.

The TIE fighter swarm was wracked by the enemy laser fire that was directed at them. Three were immediately destroyed by the initial shots, slightly less than the pilots had expected. This could have been in part due to the pilots skills, but these were pirates, not fighter aces. It was probably due to the enemies fire plan, not concentrating on the short term goal of destroying the fighters quickly, they were trying to hem the swarm into manageable boxes, herding them if you will. This would pay off in the long term, assuming the fight lasted long enough. Two more of the fighters had taken bad hits to their solar panels and were already returning back towards the Interceptor for cover. However the rest pressed onward and began to open fire with their own laser cannons. This may have seemed futile to target a ship of this seize with weapons like this but in a swarm such as this the added firepower could soon add up.
Gorg braced himself like the rest of the crew as the incoming fire battered the frontal shields. The ship shook violently and then there was a large explosion, heard all over the ship, as one of the turbolaser shots penetrated the shields and hit the armoured prow of the ship. The damage was minimal as the thick frontal armour on the frigate absorbed most of the impact that was left after the shields had stripped away some energy from the shot.
"Target their turbolasssser cannonssssss!"
The Slith spat out in the direction of the tactical officer as the enemy had launched a full volley at them. He didn't expect immidiate results but he wanted the crew to be motivated to deliver their best. If they did not then they would be unlikely to survive the battle, Gorg would kill them if he thought they were not giving 100%. Another full volley of missiles and turbolasers spat out of the front of the frigate, that was still closing the distance to the enemy cruiser. That was another 6 turbolaser shots and 3 proton torpedoes aimed at the enemy turbolaser batteries.
The trio of Guardians had almost completely circumnavigated the enemy cruiser, even at full speed the distance that separated the smaller ships from the Strike-cruiser meant the trip had taken almost all of the battle so far. They now had a clean run at the enemy freighter. However, instead of taking the shortest route, they plotted a course over the top of the Lucrehulk, into the centre of the ring. That way when the clamped onto the hull they would be protected from the enemy cruisers guns. At least until the ships made some drastic manoeuvres. In the mean time they began to fire their lasers at the massive freighter, just for a psychological effect.

A rapid double tone played over the Strike cruiser's internal comms. Despite their lack of real world combat experience, the crew was trained well & all immediately braced for a shock. A moment later, the first wave of fire from the Interceptor reached the Happy Thoughts. There was a slight tremble as the turbolaser fire splattered against the cruiser's shields, followed by a much harder shock from the torpedoes. Even as the tremors from the last blow was ringing through the cruiser, another tone sounded & the crew quickly got back to work. The tactic meant that for a moment the ship wouldn't be able to react or fire, but it did prevent many of the secondary injuries that often crippled crews during stand up fights.
-In a room very far away-
A group of four beings sat around a holowell displaying the battle over Kinyen as a collection of icons & coloured lines. Each of the beings had assumed a different role as soon as the engagement had been assigned to them. A female Taung was keeping an eye on the shields & power levels of both the MMC ships in the fight. A male human was keeping track of the various weapon systems on the Happy Thoughts & coordinating directly with the gunners. The female human in the room appeared to be little more than watching the holowell, but was carefully watching the pirate force, trying to figure out what they would do next or spot any traps they might try to spring. The last in the room was the male human that was directing the bridge crews of both ships. The four beings were talking back & forth constantly, & despite the clipped way they talked they almost seemed bored with the entire process. Only the focused look shared by all four revealed that they were taking this seriously. They knew that people were dying behind the shimmering veil of light they watched. They knew that more would die if they lost.
-Taung Shots fired on nine two oh. Shields down by two percent. Three eight seven shields down to eighty percent. Run time under current conditions is three more minutes. Suggest removing enemy fighter support for extension.
-Human Lead Copy. Agreed.
-Human Weapons Gunnery control, point defence change. Discontinue twenty percent target, eighty percent control. New allocation, fifty percent target, fifty percent control.
With that order, the point defence guns switched from only a fifth of the gun actually trying to hit the enemy fighters to half of them trying to score hits, with the other half still trying to push the nimble little fighters into better positions.
-Human Female Enemy support attempting to attach to nine two oh. Particle shield stat?
-Taung Holding. Several more hits required before they will be able to breach the shields & attach.
-Back over Kinyen-
Moments after trading the first blow with the enemy frigate, the cruiser launched its second wave. If he had been in charge, the captain would have broken off his attack on the Interceptor to go after the Guardians when they started firing on the Lucrehulk. However, he was not in command, nor had the Coordination officer even bothered to inform him about the shots. As he didn't actually control any part of the ship, only issuing commands, he was effectively doing little more than watching the battle. He couldn't help that his mind was currently replaying every story he had heard of Coordination Officers sending ships to their death for 'the mission'. It was with good reason that despite the respect deck hands had for the Coordination Officers, many saw them as soulless monsters that would do anything for victory. The captain really, really hoped that he wouldn't end as yet another story for another captain to remember.

The pirate TIE fighters immediately felt the effect of the new fire pattern adopted by the enemy laser turrets. Five of them were hit and destroyed before they even realised the enemy had changed tactics. However many of the TIEs noticed the relaxed state that the containing fire had now reached. They were also forced to breach out of the "boxes" that the enemy had been herding them into by the increased laser fire targeting them directly. Another one was destroyed trying to move away from the conflict after a damaging hit but now the majority had closed to point-blank range and were beginning to circle the enemy ship, making them very hard to contain and be targeted by the defensive turrets.
The Interceptor braced for another volley and the shields flared once again as the enemy capital ship poured energy discharges at the approaching frigate. Once again an enemy shot penetrated the shields and exploded onto the armoured prow, shaking the ship even more violently. This shot had been weakened less than the previous one due to the taxed shields on the pirate vessel. The hull was breached more drastically and damage control crews had to work harder to seal it up. This was evident to all on board, including Gorg who had a plan to deal with it.
"Re-route power from aft sshieldsss to the forward emitterssss, continue firing!"
The bridge crew shifted power from the un-used rear deflector array into the forward projectors, strengthening the prow shields. It would make it a lot more difficult for the enemy to punch through again, especially if their own weapons managed to hit and destroy some of the cruisers turbolasers. Another full volley escaped from the Interceptor aimed at the enemy turbolasers.
The Guardians buzzed around the inside of the Lucrehulk's "donut" concentrating their weapons fire on a section on the inside of the ship that was ideal for them to attached to. It was a relatively flat part of the hull and on the other side would be the port cargo bay/hanger deck. In the Guardian's own cargo bays, the pirate boarding crews prepared for action, readying weapons and checking over their own equipment. They were not expecting much resistance from within a cargo vessel such as this but they could not shake the ship's association with battle-droids!

Back with the Coordination team.
-Human female Fighter containment failed. Low chance of re-establishing.
-Human Weapons Gunnery control, point defence change. Discontinue fifty percent target, fifty percent control. New allocation, full target.
-Taung Sharp drop in nine two oh shields. breach eminent. Three eight seven shields at sixty & falling.
-Human female Energy surge in enemy frigate, likely shield boosting tactic. The battle is beginning to turn against us.
-Human lead Not yet it isn't. The frigate will fall. Once it does three eight seven will have time to recharge their shields. If the cutters attach to nine two oh, all we have to do is have it drop shields & let three seven eight cut them off with point defence. This looks more like pirates than corporate sabotage. They are looking to capture, not destroy. Be ready with system lock downs & have the crews stand by to evac.
Halfway across the galaxy, at roughly the same time, the cruiser weathered the second round of fire. Returning its own fire moments later. Any attempts at containing the fighters had been abandoned & the point defence began the much more difficult task of picking off the fighters one by one. Inside the doughnut of the cargo ship, one section of the shields was edging closer & closer to failing under the fire focused on it. An experienced crew would be able to literally see the shield fluctuating under the blasts & know that it was close.

The TIE fighter pilots were just where they wanted to be, at point blank range with the enemy. Despite the point defence batteries now abandoning any attempt to contain the swarm and focusing on direct destruction, the rate at which the fighters were being destroyed decreased. Three more were picked off but the majority were managing to weave their way around the ship, firing at targets of opportunity with relative ease.
Aboard the Interceptor the crew braced once again for the enemy volley. They were right to brace as the ship shook violently however there was only one shock this time. The increased shield power had defeated the enemy's weapons for the first time, at the expense of a lot of energy. The shields were falling fast and there was no more reserve power for them. Gorg had to make a quick decision that would affect the rest of the battle, did he hold his position and duke it out with the cruiser to give the boarding crews some extra time or did he take the battle to the cruiser, point blank range and try to take it out.
"Continue on courssssse, increase to full sssspeed."
The Interceptor had been running her engines at battle speed, which was 80% of their maximum. The helmsman now increased this to 99% of their full speed but the ships intercept course remained the same. The main weapons fired again, with the torpedoes firing in sync once again. The energy management offer was looking carefully at the current power levels of various systems and was trying to make efficiencies where possible.
The Guardians continued to hold their position within the ring of the Lucrehulk transport ship. Their fire was continued to be concentrated on a small area of the inner shields. Their boarding crews were now fully equipped and were waiting for the call.

The tension was rising with the Coordination Team.
-Taung Three eight seven at forty & falling. Several splash breaches detected.
-Human Weapons I'm not getting reports from two of the independent turbolasers & one of the battery control stations.
-Human Female Frigate increasing speed. Collision trajectory detected.
-Human Lead We need to kill that frigate now. Shift all fire to it, including the point defence.
Back on the cruiser, the third round of enemy fire rocks the ship much harder than the first two. The impacts of the enemy fire was able to breach the shields in several places before the shields stabilized. Two turbolasers had taken enough damage to be put out of the fire, one breached into space & the other taking a direct hit & being reduced to a crater. The silent turbolaser battery was technically unharmed, however the control room for the set of eight linked turbolasers had taken a direct hit. Backup crews were already working to contain the damage in though & several other places. Another crew was working to reroute control of the silent turbolaser battery to another station. The response fire on the enemy frigate included the standard wave of ion, batteries & then the independent, however this time the entire wave was studded with the much weaker but far more numerous point defence fire that was temporarily ignoring the remaining fighters.
The particle shields on the Lucrehulk finally fail, giving a clear path for the enemy gunboats to attach to the much larger ship.

The tactical officer on the bridge of the Interceptor silently celebrated as he saw the latest wave of fire hit the enemy cruiser. However he scowled when he saw the shields stabalise, those pesky engineers. The Interceptor was not so lucky, even though the enemy fire had been weakened and some of their weapons permanently taken out of the fight. The enemy fire penetrated the shields in multiple places and caused several explosions to erupt briefly but violently from the frontal hull. This did not seem to phase Gorg who clenched his tail into a ball with even more determination than before.
"Full sssspeed ahead, ram that dirty cruissssser!"
The Slith flew out of his chair as he roared his command through the bridge of the frigate. He side-winded his way from his chair to the view port in a very short amount of time, causing some bridge officers to jump with shock. They soon returned to their work when they remembered what had happened to the last bridge officer to refuse Gorg's orders. The Interceptor increased from combat speed, to a speed that was deemed unsafe to hold for a prolonged period of time. Gorg did not intend the ship to be travelling under it's own power for very long. Some of his luckier crew members had lived through three previous attempted rammings by Gorg, it was his favourite trick. He always picked a ship that had a sturdy hull and plentiful escape pods. Despite the attack plan, the weapons continued to fire on the enemy, continuing to target their weapons systems.
The TIE fighters grew bolder in their attack runs now that the fire had been focused on the Interceptor. Several of them were now flying in formation and organising attack run on the bridge of the enemy ship in an attempt to penetrate the weakening shields of the cruiser. If nothing else this kind of attack was good for morale.
The Guardians detected the failing of the Lucrehulk's shields, it was only a matter of time until something that projected a shield that large would crack under the focused fire of the pirates. The pilot's took their vessels inside the shields and quickly mag-locked onto the Hull of the gargantuan cargo ship. With much practiced finesse the pirates sealed a boarding tube onto the hull of the victim's ships and then the plasma cutters began their work. They would have to slice through the outer and then inner hull before they got anywhere near the interior of the ship. Typically the plasma cutters had to be used to cut their way through several feet of pipes and electrical wires until they got to anything that resembled the "interior" of the ship. This would take a while but soon the boarding teams of bloodthirsty pirates would be reaving their way through the corridors of the freighter.

-Human female Frigate speed still increasing.
-Taung nine two oh shields breached, hull damage detected.
-Human Lead Dana, Intruder suppression protocols.
-Human Female/Dana Understood, switching to focused control. Stage one initiated.
As the inner hull of the Lucrehulk was breached, an alarm wail filtered back to the pirates. A moment later a series of brief shudders passed through the ship.
-Prerecorded intercom Intruders detected, all crew follow the purple leads to designated safe rooms. Intruders detected ...
Looking around the pirates would notice a number of different coloured strips of paint on the floor, one of which was indeed purple. Every few metres, the strip would be interrupted by a chevron pointing the correct direction to go.
-Human female. Stage two.
-Prerecorded intercom Intruders detected, all crew follow the purple leads to designated safe rooms. Internal defenses now activating. Intruders detected ...
Down one end of the hall, a geyser of fog blasted down from the ceiling & into the deck below it. Any old space hand would instantly recognize the sight as a fire suppression cyro unit. While it was designed to put out fires, it would also kill anyone unlucky enough to get caught in the blast. Which was one of the reasons that most ships had upgraded to different designs. Just before the last blast faded, the next in sequence activated. The wave of cold was quickly marching its way down the hallway, working from farthest away from the safe room toward it, most likely to give crew time to reach safety.
Back on the cruiser, the crews managed to get the turbolaser battery back firing. However, it was just in time to brace for another wave of fire from the frigate, again the shields flickered, this time taking two of the ion cannons out of the fight, along with several other shots hitting the hull but missing weapons systems. Damage control crews raced to seal off the breaches & reroute power from broken conduits as the Cruiser returned another salvo of fire on the much smaller ship.

The crew of the Frigate had seen their last battle, at least in this frigate. The explosions from the enemy fire continued to erup from the frontal hull. Casualties were reported ion many secotors and hull breaches were being sealed mercilessly by the automated bulk-heads. Many, even though they had not yet received the order, were rushing for the escape pods. The Frigate had passed the point of no return, the helmsman now had no way to divert her course away from the enemy cruiser. This prompted an evil grin from her Captain.
"Set the ship to automated mode, to the essssscape podsssss!"
The Slith yelled through the internal comms as he slithered our of the rear of the bridge. The First Mate barely had time to set the computer to take over the main crew functions before the whole bridge was abandoned.
The TIE fighters continued their harassing fire but now most began to move to buzz around the Lucrehulk.
The Reaver boarding crew began to spill out into the corridor of the cargo ship. They quickly split into two groups, each picking a direction down the corridor, that was until they noticed the fire suppression system. That prompted some rather swift progress in the other direction, following the purple arrows. The plan quickly changed to finding a safe room or two and holding some of the crew hostage or "persuading" them to help them deactivate the security measures. The three small teams had now become one large one but they would form a plan to change that once they reached the first safe room.

The impact alarm began to sound continuously through the cruiser. The Captain blanched as he quickly rechecked all the straps on his crash webbing. Most of the bridge crew had thought that the enemy frigate was going to try & swing in close to make better use of its smaller size, but the rapidly growing cloud of escape pods fleeing from the frigate made it painfully obvious what was about to happen. Moments later there was a shuddering thud, as the two ships' shields ground against each other for a few moments before both failed. a breath later the entire cruiser jerked like a kicked can.
Inside the cargo ship, The purple arrows led the way to a room that looked like a cross between a barracks & a lounge, though all the furnishings were of rather cheep quality. Above the door, marked in basic, mando'a, & bocce were the words "Safe Room". The room itself was empty, but was at an intersection of three corridors. A quick glance down any of the corridors would quickly spot similar purple arrows & matching advancing curtains of fire suppressants.

Emerging from hyperspace, a Scimitar II-Class Sith Infiltrator appeared over the agriworld of Kinyen. Seated in the cockpit, Venom Starkiller was in conversation with a hologram that was shimmering before him."-understand, mi'lord. Persuasion and subtlety will serve me here over brute force. I will contact you once the Gran have pledged allegiance to the Imperium." The hologram dissipated, allowing Venom to focus on the task at hand. Convincing the socialist demarchy of Kinyen that joining the Blackguard Imperium was in their best interests. And if a satisfactory arrangement couldn't be met, then Venom was to eliminate their government in favor of a governor of the Sith'ari's choosing. At this point, he was hoping that they'd resist and he could slaughter them all, but to keep his word, he would try to convince them. Though he wasn't expecting them to agree to his terms. Gripping the controls, Venom piloted the craft down to Kinyen's surface...

Emerging from hyperspace, two warships and a handful of transports and freighters appeared over Kinyen. The two warships, recognized as Terminus-Class Destroyers from the Sith'ari's fleet, were escorting the freighters and transports as they began landing troops, supplies and construction materials in an effort to begin bringing Kinyen into the fold of the Imperium. As the transports and freighters made their way to the surface, two Solo-Class Combat Freighters appeared and moved into orbit to begin offloading supplies, equipment and workers to begin construction on the orbital defenses of Kinyen.
