Greetings one and all, great players of Jedi vs Sith!
This thread has been created in an effort to test the waters for not only your enjoyment of the site, but also any ideas to improve it as well. Consider this a suggestion box in a college dorm. You can suggest we switch around some roommates because you want to be with your buddies, or tell us that you are content and you love us, and do not want to change anything. Change is scary, after all.
First, to lay down some ground rules. It's pretty basic stuff. Don't be mean. Give serious suggestions. But to go a bit deeper in description....
1 - Be nice to another. This thread is meant to bring you together to brainstorm, not to bicker about what one person wants and the other hating on your idea. This is an open thread for ideas, no matter what they are, as long as they are serious. Please keep it civil.
2 - Please be serious when making suggestions in this thread. Not only does it clutter the thread with useless suggestions, it can keep us from finding the truly good ones that can make the site a better place for all.
3 - Have fun. As stated earlier this thread is to help make JvS a better place for everyone. Brainstorm, collaborate, discuss it, and come up with some good ideas that would make Kulu himself wish he was still here. Make us proud.
P.S. The coffee machine is next to the open bar.

First suggestion! More background colours. I would really love to see a nice purple! (Totally serious about this though, more colours makes it easier for me and I'm sure others, to distinguish their alternate accounts.)

The minimalist theme is nice but too minimalist. Is there one that doesn't have the background graphic? That slows page loading quite a bit. Not that I'm not a fan of the symbolic second (2.0) Death Star, but I'm sure we're at the Suncrusher already.

(Totally serious about this though, more colours makes it easier for me and I'm sure others, to distinguish their alternate accounts.) Purple is definitely coming, whenever I have the time to arm wrestle the color palette. And maybe one or two other (surprise) colors as well! The minimalist theme is nice but too minimalist. Is there one that doesn't have the background graphic? That slows page loading quite a bit. Not that I'm not a fan of the symbolic second (2.0) Death Star, but I'm sure we're at the Suncrusher already. The death star image is 36 KB so it shouldn't have that big an impact -- all the javascript for the dropdown menus and stuff are what really seems to slow the site down. But you make a good point, and I'll consider some other options.

As always I am pushing for the publicity side of things. Things site wide are slow(er) than usual due to the lack of fresh meat. There must be some easy way t get our name out there that will work.

Hi, I have a more technical suggestion than anything else. I would like to see the site rebuilt. It was a bit more of a simpler time when we first came out with the site, we used phpbb3 and that was okay for the time (not). Not to mention the load balance on the old MYSQL databases that sent us crashing because they got corrupt. And all that bullshit. Let's get a few things stated: I don't want to go back to php or mysql. Those should die. What I am suggesting is a site rework using these tools. We can leverage a JS framework such as Meteor.JS or express.js. This should allow us to build the front end of the forum/application pretty swell. We then marry the backend with the front end by leveraging some good ole Node.JS. Though these frameworks should already leverage that, it may be a good idea to do some low-level node.JS tweaking (or not). Maybe add in some Gulp.js to leverage a building system and task running system that is lightyears ahead of Grunt.JS. (A few disclaimers, I happen to know the developers who built Gulp.JS. You can learn more about them here at WeAreFractal. And, I also happen to know a few Meteor.JS "evangelists".) Now, you may be wondering won't we run into the same problems? In my experience, we won't because we will be using MongoDB which is a stronger database than the sql alternatives. Since, it has document oriented storage, we can fully leverage JavaScript from start to finish. Also, if we were to leverage meteor.JS, when someone posts, your page will update before you post, so you know what is happening. The possibilities are endless and with node.JS gaining steam and the ability to host its own server, we don't even need to run apache or nygynx or IIS. I also forgot to mention, that we could have a seamless chat integration. Let's put php behind us and go full on JS/HTML5. Its the way of the future, lets not get stuck in old technologies.

I have a couple of suggestions. The first one is related to the background colors, as excited as I am to have purple is there any way we might be able to get pink as well? And second, is there a way to "favorite" colors for posting so that we don't have to find the right color every time we post?

.... Is there a way to "favorite" colors for posting so that we don't have to find the right color every time we post? You can set up default text that comes up in all your posts in the settings. If you use two or three fonts, copy and paste them there, and you'll automatically have your fonts ready. All you need to do is remember which code is which. For example, I happen to know my "ice" font for speaking is 8ad7e6. It's not exactly a favorite system but it helps in keeping the colors you use continuous.

Now to figure out where that is exactly. Ah. Here we go!
Hit your Profile tab, or click your name, whatever. Hit Edit Profile. Hit settings. Set your posting default to BBCode instead of Preview. Type in your codes in the box beneath that. Save it.

is there any particular reason why of all the planets Yavin has the number listed after it in the modern tradition instead of in roman numerals like all the other planets?
especially since the Praxeum inside the planet is listed as "Jedi Praxeum of Yavin IV"

I will be sure to pass this up to our resident tech head, Chill. I am afraid I am bit deficient in the...whatever language that was. Thank you for the suggestion. As always I am pushing for the publicity side of things. Things site wide are slow(er) than usual due to the lack of fresh meat. There must be some easy way t get our name out there that will work. We are well aware of this issue and we have been discussing ways to advertise the Site. Word of mouth is always a good option, and I would hope everyone who writes here would brag about the happiness they have found here. We are still, however, trying to find better way.is there any particular reason why of all the planets Yavin has the number listed after it in the modern tradition instead of in roman numerals like all the other planets? especially since the Praxeum inside the planet is listed as "Jedi Praxeum of Yavin IV" The Wookie page lists Yavin 4 with the number rather than the roman numerals, though I will bring this up with the others.
Please, don't hold back people. This is for the site. Don't be afraid to call us out, or point out issues, or simply think of something spectacular. We will take them seriously, so long as they themselves are serious.

I always thought that Arabic numerals were used for moons while Roman numerals were used for planets, but Wookieepedia shows there is no such consistency. There does seem to be a correlation between the types of numerals used and the total number of bodies to be named. I guess no one wants to try to remember which one is Jupiter XXXVII versus Jupiter XXXVIII.

I have one. As much as I enjoy the old site and Ajax chat due to it not working new people can't enjoy the chat. I know for myself it's the community that keeps me around, being able to talk to all you fine folks. Other sites I have been on have had some form of chat be it good or not. Perhaps the addition of a chat box would benefit this site as it would help hold user interest.

Look, is there anyway to reinstate the warning when people post while you write something like on 1.5?
Looking like a herb and having to post edit feels too clumsy.
Also, I'd really appreciate if you could modify the post display order, as in the most recent posts show up on the first page and trail backwards the lower on the page you go.
Don't know if anyone here used it, but that was my method back in 1.5.
Do this, and I will advertise for this site with threats.

I talked to the ProBoards developers about this last fall, and was told that neither feature was currently possible. I suppose it couldn't hurt to ask again.

Perhaps the addition of a chat box would benefit this site as it would help hold user interest. We had a chat box for the first several months that the new site was open, and no one used it, so I turned it off. I would be happy to bring it back, if only it didn't slow the site down so much. What we really need is a chat capability that is as responsive as AJAXChat, but can incorporate the logins from the new site, and that has proven to be very difficult from a technical perspective. I am working on a concept for connecting AJAXChat to the new site, but ProBoards makes this very difficult, and the only service that I've found that offers it is a paid subscription. So to make a long story short, I completely agree with you, but so far I've tried several solutions that don't work, so I don't know when or if this will get done.

Hi, I have a more technical suggestion than anything else. I would like to see the site rebuilt. Ah, if only we had unlimited time and resources to devote to this project, just think what we could accomplish ...! It's an excellent suggestion from a technical perspective, but unless you're volunteering to do all the work, or pay someone else to do it, I can't see it happening. Please do PM me if you want to discuss it further, though.
