While she was not against these moments of affection, she had honestly intended the photo as more of a secret gift on her part with Yvaine getting more of the attention. But her Younger Sister had foiled such efforts and managed to manipulate her into being here for the giving of the gift. Despite her younger years spent with her Father and Faina around, she'd spent a little over the same amount of time training with the Knights of Ren. It would be extremely ambitious to believe that such an amount of time in training had not affected her. Moments like this were not big among the Ren and the few moments she had shared with Jin in the past had been between the two of them alone. Thus creating a certain apprehension. Something she was going to have to work on going forward once her and Jin became more public with others.
But she did her best to focus her mind and make it through the moment. Smiling as she gave Yvaine a high five I did see it Evvy. Told you we could manage it... Thankfully Yvaine then prompted Remus into the spotlight for a moment. Her younger brother then announcing he had managed to get a commission about a warship as an Ensign. Not that he was undeserving of such a posting, but there was certainly some prior engagements he had skipped through that most of his fellow classmates would be subjected to. Hopefully he would be up for the challenge and not become too isolated.
But soon enough Yvaine was once again outputting enough energy to power a small town. She frowns a little as Yvaine rapid fires off her questions I'm afraid I did not hear back from Ocky, it seems my twin powers were not enough... She turned to a smile then How much did you make poor Nicolina cook? I suppose we can get some starters...

Yvaine frowns when Fiora says that she has yet to hear from her twin, having hoped that they could get everyone together for what may be the last time in what, if past history is any indicator, could be a very long time given that Octavian will undoubtedly be exceptionally busy for the foreseeable future with everything that will be involved in his coronation and then going about his duties as the Emperor, while Fiora will return to her duties as a Knight of Ren and Remus will soon be assuming his duties aboard the frigate he has been assigned to. In the past, Yvaine and Remus have always had one another, along with their Aunties Ishild and Nicolina, when their family has been scattered about, as their Mum, as Grandmaster of the Imperial Knights and possessed of as workaholic a character as their Dad, was often away on missions or diplomatic affairs, and Yvaine can imagine all too well how their Mum will probably, soon enough when her grief is not as debilitating as it must be now, look for things to devote herself to in order to escape that grief. A part of Yvaine recognizes that her relentless cheerfulness and manic energy is not entirely dissimilar from that trait of her Mum's, that she keeps talking and smiling and finding things to do in order to avoid having to deal with the pain of losing her father, but she has thus far been able to keep that part of her from doing much more than recognizing the avoidance and occasionally trying to ominously warn her that avoidance is not the same as escape and that there will come a time when avoidance is no longer possible.
Crinkling her freckled nose and pouting, Yvaine pats Fiora on the back and says, "I think it is just that future Emperor stuff trumps twin powers sometimes, Fifi, and then bobs her eyebrows when asked about what she successfully cajoled Nicolina into making for them, taking Fiora's hand and pulling her along as she skips to the kitchen, Oh, nothing much really, just some curried nuna-rolls, spiced Cannok canapes, and Lalaren blooms for starters, she waves a hand at some dishes in warmers on the counters, then waves the other at the oven as she says, and baked dru'un slices in fish sauce for the main course, and, she skips to the fridge and taps it, Zoochberry Surprise for dessert! Pointing towards the appetizers, she says, Let's bring them out before Remmy and Mum start brooding again, then groans as she peeks around the corner and sees that Remus is standing and looking out a window with his hands clasped behind his back while Faina is sitting on the couch with her chin resting on the back of a hand as she looks forlornly at her and their father's wedding picture on the mantle, Ugh, too late, they're already back at it, she takes one of the appetizers from the warmer and starts heading to the living room as she jokes, This is why we needed Ocky, someone has to keep an eye on them at all times, obvi."

Well, thankfully Yvaine did not seem to disappointed upon hearing that Octavian had not responded to her invite. As much fun as she'd forced him through earlier in the throne room, there was a lot she knew he had to oversee in the coming week. So his absence would be excused. Her hand was soon grabbed once more as Yvaine dragged her off to the kitchen where a number of dishes were being kept warm/hot as her younger sister detailed all of the prepared dishes. Fiora collected another of the appetizers and chuckled Ah yes, Emperor Broody Face himself... yes he would be the perfect one to keep an eye on them both... As has become common place between them, Fiora walked over by Yvaine and bumped hips Let's get them fed Evvy...

Laughing when Fifi christens Ocky Emperor Broody Face, Yvaine pretends to almost fall over when she gets a hip bump along with the instruction to get the other Broody Faces in the family fed, grinning as she lifts the tray of Lalaren blooms and replies, "What does it look like I'm doing, Fifi?"
Setting the tray of Lalaren blooms on the coffee table in front of the sofa their Mum is sitting on, Yvaine waves her hands over the tray like a magician and says, "Ta da! Looking over at Remmy, she calls out, Come on, Remmy, you can stare out the window all manfully stoic after we eat, get over here and have some Lalaren blooms!"
Remus, sighing and walking over to the sofa with all the enthusiasm of a prisoner on death row walking to his final meal, picks up a Lalaren and holds it up while looking at Yvaine as though to say see-I'm-eating-are-you-happy-now, and then plops down on the sofa as he pops it into his mouth.
Yvaine, sitting next to their Mum after handing her one of the nuna-rolls Fifi brought in, looks at her Mum's hair and says matter of factly, "You've got bed head, Mum, then hops up and says, Don't move, telling Fifi, Go get the Cannoks, Fifi, and don't let Remmy go back to staring out the window."
Remus, picking up another Lalaren after finishing the first, tells Fiora, "This is your fault for encouraging her. Now we all have to suffer."
Yvaine, returning with a bush, starts brushing the tangles out of their Mum's hair as she says cheerfully, "At least your suffering while not starving, Remmy. Wait'll you see what Auntie Niccy made for the main course and for dessert! You can thank me and Fifi later."

She laughed at Yvaine's dramatised stumbling and question It looks more like you are struggling to stay upright Evvy, careful... Fiora followed close by into the lounge and set down the nuna-rolls and took a seat as she indulged in the entree she had carried out while Yvaine and Remus quarrelled a little. However, her rest lasted only but a moment as Yvaine was soon ordering her to get the Cannoks. She got up and moved past Remus, tussling her younger brothers hair Careful little Remmy, or perhaps your future crew mates will find out about Evvy's nickname for you... Her trip to the kitchen this time was a much shorter one, collecting the Cannoks and bringing them back out with minimal fuss. Yvaine already back and brushing Faina's hair. As she set the tray down she raised her hands into the air Oh, no no little sister... I take no credit for this feast. But you are right, Remmy should say thank you for the food.

"Yes, Yvaine grins as she brushes the tangles from their Mum's hair, he certainly should," poking her tongue out at Remus.
Remus, having found his appetite, finishes a Lalaren and picks up a handful of Cannoks, muttering in response to Fiora's threat about Yvaine revealing her nickname for him to his future shipmates, "It can't possibly be any worse than the call sign they came up for me, without revealing what that is as he tells Yvaine, And I should be thanking Aunt Nicolina, shouldn't I? She did all the work after all."
Yvaine points out cheerily, "I picked out the menu, but I will take that as a thank you all the same, dearest brother of mine. Now, she says as she takes a look at their Mum's hair, now free from tangles, do you want a ponytail or pigtails, Mummy?"
Faina, shooing Yvaine away, says, "I think it's fine down, thank you, pet."
Pouting a bit, having had her heart set on putting their Mum's hair in pigtails for the fun of it, Yvaine says, "But pigtails would be so cute, then tries to drag Fiora into it by asking, What do you think, Fifi?"

Fiora had taken a seat with the entree's all out and set on the table. She settled in and tried some of Nicolina's cooking, impressed by the commander's varied talents. Given what standard military issued food was like, it was a wonder how Nicolina had such a varied palette. Perhaps something to ask her later. For now, her focus shifted between the quarrelling siblings and then to Yvaine and Faina. Her younger sister once again trying to rope her into some further mischief I think that sounds like a fantastic look for Faina... You know, you should also do Remmy's hair as well...

Faina arches an eyebrow and tries to give Fiora an annoyed look that winds up being more amused than anything, sighing as Yvaine takes her lack of further protest as an invitation to go ahead with putting her hair into pigtails high up on the sides of her head.
Remus, handing their mother a Cannok, gives Yvaine a warning look as he says, "You're not touching my hair, and grinning as he brushes his short red hair back fussily and adds, It's perfect the way it is."
Yvaine, putting the finishing touches on their mother's pigtails, tilts her head to the side as though appraising Remus' hair, then says, "I dunno, Remmy, it is getting a little long for military regulations, so I think I should give it a trim, maybe do one of those little military mohawk things?"
Shaking his head, Remus finishes a Cannok and grabs a handful of nuna-rolls, "Hard pass, then asks while munching on a nuna-roll, When are we having dinner?"
Faina arches an eyebrow and asks teasingly, "Are you sure you'll still have room after all of the appetizers you've had? Save some for the rest of us," she jokes, leaning over to steal one of the nuna-rolls Remus had picked up.
Yvaine, setting the brush aside now that she has finished with their mother's hair, asks Fiora, "What do you think, Fifi? Movie then dinner, or dinner then movie?"

She could tell the look Faina was trying to give her, but was failing miserably at. But ultimately Yvaine won and got to work, providing quite the amusing viewing experience as her step-mother, the still grand master of the Imperial Knights, was getting pigtails. Fiora kept grazing on the entree's as Remus then protested to getting a haircut I don't know... a mohawk could be fun, it'll make quite the impression. She chuckled a little before turning back to Yvaine as her younger sister asked whether to have dinner before or after the movie. Faina's teasing comment not going unnoticed, but unremarked upon. Fiora was just glad to see Faina at ease a little bit Dinner, then movie. Wouldn't want the food to go to waste if we happen to doze off, now would we?

Yvaine giggles as their Mum, joining in on teasing Remus, leans over and brushes his hair up into a mohawk as he nearly topples off of the sofa as he tries to escape.
"Not the hair, not the hair!" Remus protests while trying not to laugh and to look annoyed, managing to escape from their mother and then fussily brushing his hair back into his preferred style.
"Definitely not, Yvaine agrees when Fifi says they would not want to risk dozing off during the movie and missing out on the dinner, then hops up and says, I'll get everything plated and laid out! You guys meet me in the dining room when you are ready," then skips off to the kitchen. Making sure that she leaves enough of the baked dru'un slices in fish sauce and Zoochberry Surprise aside for Octavian in case he shows up, and for Fifi to take back to Jin, Yvaine sets the table in the dining room and plates everything as prettily as she can before the others join her.
Remus, pulling out a chair for their mother while Yvaine pulls out one for Fifi, tells his younger sister, "Nice job, little sister."
Once everyone has taken their seats, Yvaine cheerily tells them, "Dig in! After taking a bit of her dru'un, Yvaine asks Fifi, So, what movie did you pick for us, Fifi?"

It was amusing how protective of his current hairstyle that Remus was as he dived off the sofa. Fiora slipped from her seat and palced covers over the entrée's to make sure they would not go cold, before corralling Faina and Remus into the dining room, moving over to the seat her little sister was holding out for her and sliding into it. As Yvaine said they could dig in, Fiora cut off some dru'un to sample first, knowing she would do well not to stuff her face too much with Yvaine around. Something which proved true a few moments later Well, I just finished this book, Defender of the Night, which they made into a film recently. I'm hoping it's good. It's a high fantasy. Lots of magic and monsters...

Remus, chuckling as Fiora describes the movie she has chosen, jokes, "So, just like everyday life for you then, eh?"
Faina, not amused by her youngest son's joke, gives him a less than pleased look as she tells Fiora, "It sounds interesting, I'm sure we'll all enjoy it."
Yvaine, kicking Remus in the shin underneath the table, smiles cheerily as she tells Fiora, "Yeah, Fifi, I'm sure we'll all enjoy it, even though she typically prefers psychological thrillers to high fantasy films, and then takes a bite of her dru'un before asking, Is it a standalone film, or part of a trilogy?"
Remus, who has actually read the book himself, tries to redeem himself by explaining that the movie is the first in a planned trilogy of films, though the author has currently only finished the first two books in the series, then echoes Fiora's hopes about the film being as good as the book even though he cannot imagine how it could possibly capture all of the details in the book in only two and a half hours. "Who is your favorite character?" Remus asks Fiora, obviously happy to have someone else to discuss the book with given that Yvaine reads more textbooks than anything else and he cannot recall their mother ever having read anything for fun.
Holding up a hand, Yvaine protests, "Nope, nope, no discussing characters or events until after we've all seen it. No spoilers allowed for those of us that haven't read it yet, please."
"We'll talk later, Remus tells Fiora, I can't wait to see how they handle. . ."
Kicking Remus under the table again, Yvaine warns him, "No spoilers I said!"
Faina smiles as she watches her children as they start talking about other books or films they each enjoy, glad to see them all getting along, and to see them all together when it is so rare that they have the opportunity to spend time together as a family. Her smile fades as her thoughts turn, naturally, to why it is that they are all together, and Faina finds her gaze moving to the unoccupied chair at the opposite head of the table where Nicademus would be sitting were he still with them.

She gave Remus a less than impress look, preparing to try jump scare him with a quick change of her face when Faina and Yvaine interceded. With her younger brother properly admonished, she let him off this time. Especially as he launched into an explanation that there were multiple movies planned and showed that he had read the books. She chuckled as Yvaine kept trying to stop Remus from spoilering anything, which was a feeling she understood well. She holds up her hands in surrender before her younger sister turns on her I promise no spoilers. But I will agree it will be difficult to do in a movie, what it took an entire book to do. But you'll see who my favourite character is, and it's not the main one... It's not a spoiler! She tries to pre-empt her sister's wrath, but suspects it won't work overly well. But if Remus had indeed read the books, then he would know well know who she meant. Stories sometimes resonated with a person's life, and there was one character in 'Defender of the Night' that Fiora saw herself in. I she hadn't known any better, she might have thought someone was using her life as inspiration for the series. But it was all just coincidence.
She shifted her attention to Faina then, seeing the lost in thought gaze associated with those staring into the distance. While typically Fiora would have her usual seat closer to Nicademus' seat while Octavian sat next to Faina, today she had taken her twin's spot. She subtly reached out her hand and placed it atop Faina's to give it a squeeze and offering a small hopeful smile that her step-mother might take some strength from

Faina gives Fiora an appreciative smile when the feel of her eldest daughter squeezing her hand breaks her out of her silent contemplation of Nicademus' empty chair, and then does her best to rejoin the ongoing conversation.
"Oh, Remus says, pointing at Fiora when she tells them that they will find out who her favorite character is, her hint about it not being the main one giving him a very good idea who she is referring to, I bet I know who it is! The . . . "
Kicking Remus in the shin under the table, Yvaine warns him, "No spoilers!"
Lifting his hands as though in surrender, Remus tells Fiora, "I actually just got the figure of that character! I wasn't sure the line would go deep enough to include. . ."
Yvaine, taking a bite of dru'un, tells Fiora, "He means doll. He has a ton of dolls actually. . ."
"They aren't dolls, Remus huffs, they are 1/6 scale high end collectible figures. . ."
Yvaine grins as she mouths the word 'dolls' to Fiora, then says, "You can show Fifi your dolls . . . sorry, I mean your collectible figures, after the movie, Remmy. Now, she points a finger at Remus and then Fifi, no more talk about the book or the characters or the dolls from the movie until after we all watch it."
"Collectibles, grumbles Remus, then asks with a playful grin, Can we talk about which character reminds me of Jin?"
"No, Yvaine scolds Remus, you may not. Not until after the movie."

As Faina returned to the present gathering, she removed her hand and returned to eating as Remus earned himself another kick of the shin under the table. Had she baited him a little as payback for his poor joke earlier? perhaps. She had some more dru'un, feeling pretty content with herself as her younger brother admitted to having brought the figurine of Cavra Neler. No doubt he had Durzan of Kaveldun, the titular Defender of the Night, as well prominently displayed Didn;t think the line would go deep enough to include what? She smirked, willing to risk Evvy's wrath a little to find out what Remus has been cut off from saying. But the pair descended into playful bickering over whether they were Dolls or Figurines. She took another mouthful of dru'un as Yvaine put her foot down again about no more spoilers. But she just about choked on some of her food as Remus made his comment about Jin. She'd almost forgotten about the subplot between Cavra and Petra of Arcsea, especially that one chapter when they were in Odrana and they... Her face took on a bright red blush as she recalled how the scene had been written in the book. Surely they wouldn't have gone that in depth in the movie, right? no, it wasn't rated that highly that such a scene could have been included. But something would be in there. Cavra and Petra were on par for the most popular ships in the series alongside Cavra and Durzan.
As a slight panic kicked in, she was starting to regret a little her choice in movie for her family. How she could have accidentally sabotaged herself like this was a little awkward. But she focused her thoughts, trying to calm herself. Everything would be fine, she just needed to not make too much of a scene about it. She shot a glare at Remus as she tried to will the blush away We most certainly will not! Even after the movie... She huffed and took a long drink of her water to clear the food she had almost choked on and resumed eating. She was going to do her best to make it through this movie now. Hopefully Remus and Faina would be a little less perceptive than Yvaine had been earlier

Remus opens his mouth to answer Fiora's question about the depth of the Defender of the Night Collectible action figure, not doll, line, but hesitates and looks at Yvaine and explains first, "This is just a general statement about collectible action figure. . . "
"Dolls, you mean?" Yvaine teases her brother, getting an amused smile from their Mum.
Sighing heavily, Remus explains to Fiora, "Usually most companies only produce figures of the main characters, but some go deeper and include popular secondary characters as well. Warming up to the topic, he explains, Defender of the Night, then looks at Yvaine and says, general statement, no spoilers, so no kicking please, then continues telling Fiora, is popular enough, and interest in seeing figures of characters like, well, he hurriedly moves on without going into specifics, the ones we were kind of talking about get produced as well."
Yvaine grins and asks, "So, basically what you are saying is that some movies get more dollies made than others?"
Faina, trying not to look too amused, gently tells Yvaine, "Yes, pet, some movies have more collectibles produced than others, and then smiles and tries to sound a bit more enthusiastic than her mood really permits her to feel about anything as she says, Well, I am certainly interested in seeing this movie now, telling Remus and Fiora, I will have to pay attention and see if I can guess which characters the two of you are talking about."
Yvaine, spearing a piece of dru'un with her fork, gives Fiora a wink as she playfully reminds everyone, "Ah, yes, but apparently we will most certainly not be discussing who some of those characters remind certain people of," guessing from her sister's reaction to Remus assertion that there is a character that reminds him of Jin that the character is probably involved in some kind of relationship with a character that shares some similarities with Fiora herself, and making a mental note to check out the book for herself sometime as novels tend to be better than films and typically reveal more about the characters themselves given the limitations of the medium of holovids.

As Remus clarified his earlier comment, she was a little relieved to discover it was so mundane in comparison to what her mind had worried it meant. To be honest, Petra and Cavra were definitely Main Characters, just not THE Main Character. But it was also true some series' did only produce the titular character and that was all. But all of that was just semantics, the important part was that everyone was chatting and getting involved in the conversation, even Faina. She did her best to fight back the blush she felt at the corners of her cheeks when Faina mentioned being on the look out for the characters Remus and her had been mentioning That's... not necessary... Sh shied away from the comment a little, with Yvaine not particularly helping the cause with her own comment a few moments later. Well they had gotten this far, so there was no real turning back now. She finished up the last of her meal quickly whilst idly wondering about the fact it would be better to get this over with sooner than later

Yvaine, feeling bad for Fifi when she sees how uncomfortable the discussion about the characters in the movie is making her, tries to help out by patting Faina on the arm and cheerfully telling her, "Just enjoy the movie, Mum, let those two nerd out over it by themselves."
Remus, laughing and pointing at Yvaine says, "Pot meet kettle, grinning as he asks rhetorically, Who is the one that reads science and psychology texts for fun?"
Poking her tongue out at Remus as, seeing that Fiora and the rest of her family have finished their dinner, she gets up and starts clearing the dishes, Yvaine counters by asking, "Oh, and who is the one that reads accounts and analyses of historical naval battles for fun?"
Remus, helping with the dishes, counters his younger sister's counter, "Who has posters of scientists and psychologists in their room?"
Faina, smiling as she listens to Remus and Yvaine bicker, suggests, "Why don't we bring the dessert into the living room and start the movie?"
Remus, getting the case for the holovid while Faina and Yvaine start bringing out the Zoochberry Surprise on plates for everyone, smiles as he tells Fiora excitedly, "Sweet! The extended edition!"
Yvaine, groaning as she sits on the couch beside Faina after handing Fifi a plate, asks, "How long is it?"
Remus, setting up the holovid and starting it, says happily, "Four and a half hours!"

Fiora was thankful for the distraction that Yvaine and Remus' playful bickering offered as they cleared the dishes. With her younger siblings tending to the dishes, she accompanied Faina about. In a more divide and conquer strategy, her and Yvaine could handle one of their more brood prone family members with ease. Though if she was honest, Fiora was certain she had the more challenging task. She made her way for the couch then as the dishes were done and Remus come out of the kitchen. She smirked knowingly It was no easy task, but if we're going to watch the movie, we might as well do it with the longest run time possible... She didn't want to dare imagine what cuts would have been made to fit a regular run time, nor did she intend to ever find out. She slid onto the couch and accepted the offered plate and took a tasting sample You wanted us all here Evvy, and I've merely catered to that demand...

Each and every time that Faina finds herself enjoying the company of her children she feels an almost immediate sharp pang of guilt, as though allowing herself to feel anything other than the suffocating, crushing weight of the grief that accompanies Nicademus' death is somehow a betrayal of all that he was to her and of all that they shared together. Though she knows that life must go on, the fact that it does so seems a cruel denial of what she has lost to Faina, and even though she does her best to look as though she continues to enjoy the time she and her children are spending together, she cannot help but feel exhausted by the effort to maintain the appearance.
Remus nods in eager agreement to Fiora's assertion that the longest run time is the only way to enjoy Defender of the Night, "Oh, definitely! I just hope that the four and half hours gave them enough time to include everything! I mean, if they don't show the scene . . ."
"Spoilers! warns Yvaine around the mouthful of Zoochberry Surprise she has at the moment, Shush and just watch the movie, Remmy."
Lifting his hands in surrender, Remus tells Fiora, "We'll talk about it later!"
Three Hours Later . . .
Remus, when a scene between Petra and Cavra begins that he wasn't sure the film would include begins, turns to smile at Fiora excitedly to see if she is just as glad to see that the scene made it into the holovid, shakes his head with a quiet laugh as he sees that Yvaine, curled up beside Faina, has fallen asleep beside their also sleeping mother, and whispers to Fiora, "Looks like we don't have to worry about spoilers anymore. Returning his attention fully to the holovid, he asks quietly, What do you think so far? Its one of the most faithful adaptations of a book I've ever seen, he enthuses, continuing just as excitedly, The casting is perfect, isn't it? Petra is just like I imagined her in my head!"
