With Liya's dismissal of his request Daniel didn't quite know if he was more relieved or frustrated, in either case he simply nodded, accepting the answer he received without argument. Things would move more slowly but Zooey would be safe from all of this. Turning back to the monitors he opened his journal and continued his work, taking himself out of the conversation as he had nothing further to add at this time, but he kept his ears open to listen. Dante's honesty was taken with a grain of salt given the revelation of his true name, Dante the Deceiver, but the others accepted it for what it was, and asked few questions. All but one, this new person he had yet to meet (Seros), whether that was a reflection of the people he had fallen in with remained to be seen, and Daniel would not jump to conclusions so quickly as this man seemed to have already done. Observation was part of a his job, and he had yet to deduce the character these people. He simply needed more information.
It may have appeared odd to those in the room, even cold and uncaring perhaps, but Daniel's attention did not waver from his work as Dante answered the man's questions and in great detail. But he was not unfamiliar with the plight of the people of Firrerre. What happened to them was monstrous, unquestionably evil, but such was the way of the Empire of old. Countless fell victim to their wrath. This was however the first time that he had heard a first hand account of the atrocities committed, the anger, the pain, the hate, all so evident in the retelling. How could he be blamed for such a skewed outlook on the human race? The traits that Dante used to describe humanity were not exclusive to any one species in the galaxy. In fact it was a Firrerreon's plan who endangered his species, not a human, the same Firrerreo who also pulled the trigger, a detail he either didn't know or neglected to mention. Humanity has its wicked souls, as do many races in the galaxy. Yet he so callously condemns humans, not taking into account that the acts of a few do not define an entire race.
Daniel believed in the good of others, that people are inherently good, that evil preys on those who have lost themselves somewhere along their path. It is a belief that he was sure he did not share with probably everyone on this ship, but it was how he chose to see the galaxy. No one was beyond redemption. And though he did not trust Dante, in the briefest of moments he saw the good in him, a glimmer of the man that Daniel suspected his employer once was.
And after Dante exited the cockpit he could feel the looming tension and awkwardness in the room, it was thick, heavy, unsettling and made him anxious to get to Bespin and get off this ship. He needed not only to purchase some much needed supplies but he needed some space from these people. And for the first time since Liya had spoken to him he turned in his chair to see everyone in the room. Just at first glance he could tell that they were all looking to Liya for leadership, it made him wonder if that was the chain of command or the situation. But judging from her body language it was clear that the situation called for a leader, and the flock had selected one. Her tone, her eyes, her expression, the subtleties in all of them hinted at a familiar place in his past, when leadership was thrust upon him.
He was a teachers aide in his senior year at the University, he mostly graded papers, did what he was told, and got very little time to actually interact with the students. It wasn't until he was put on the spot when the professor was unexpectedly absent and Daniel had to lead the class. He didn't want it, though he was capable to do it. Whether it was fear, or self doubt, or lack of preparation, or even a combination of all three. But he weathered the storm and was better for it. This situation was different yes, but the circumstances were very similar, perhaps he could help her through if she started to falter.
He turned to look at Liya, a brief, sympathetic glace, it wasn't his turn to talk, not yet anyway, so he remained silent and seemingly unnoticed.

Since this is Dante's plot, and heavily tied in to his personal backstory, you probably should talk to him directly. I don't have an issue with another party joining the hunt, but I am worried about another collaborator slowing us down even further. We've had enough trouble moving the story forward as it is. If you do join the hunt, you need to be reliable if/when we cross paths. I don't have an issue with it par say, but I have to agree with Liya...another person is going to slow us down even more...and we are SLOW as it is. If you hunt for the eye, just keep in mind it does have a very important function in my backstory...I essentially need it in one place, for a specific event...after that, I have no further need for it. Posted by the way; took me a while, I had to get into a Dante mindset. I may have a way to allow the Mysterious Man to become involved without adding more writers to the mix. I could make it so that Zooey is one of his people, it would give him first hand knowledge of the Eye and make a good story for me. I figure that could kill two birds with one stone, he'd have his information and I could get rid of an NPC that I never use.

With Dante's arrival Daniel opted to remain silent, the guy sort of gave him the creeps and it seemed as though the conversation would sway the mysterious employer's direction anyway. So he continued to pour over the information in his journal, formulating his newest theories about the Eye and it's possible locations, all while keeping an open ear to the conversation taking place behind him.
There was slight pause with Daniel as Dante stated that he suspected everyone had their own reasons for coming here and the doctor felt a sudden rush of heat come over him. It took but a fraction of a moment to subside however, and Daniel continued with his work realizing that the statement was directed at the crew members and not himself. Reaching up he scratched his right brow as he gave Liya a sidelong glance before returning eyes to the screen in front of him and his ears to Dante, his thoughts, however, remained elsewhere, distracting him more than he had been since the Jekk attack.
Daniel's ears of course never strayed from Dante's words. Of course Dante's initial statements were taken with a grain of salt, which is to be expected for someone who calls himself 'the Deceiver,' because who's to say they aren't being lied to in order to be swayed into doing the bidding of a man they barely know?
What was more interesting was Daniel's reaction to Dante's reveal that the Eye was a weapon, or rather lack there of. His ears perked up when the conversation turned toward the artifact, and the conversation gained more of his attention, but he wasn't surprised, or even paused to hear that the very item they were searching for was a weapon. But how did the Syndicate know? Unless..., the thought gave him pause, perhaps in time to be construed as shock from the reveal to the rest of the crew.
It wasn't until Dante mentioned that he intended to use the Eye as a bargaining chip that Daniel's full attention was gained, and he turned with furrowed brow, looking at Dante over his glasses. He can't be serious can he? He thought as he shut his journal and gripped it in his right palm. Daniel then sat quietly, waiting for Dante to finish before clearing his throat, not quite sure what it was he was about to say. The truth, or to go against his moral code and lie, "I haven't found anything." Middle of the road, he wasn't lying, not technically, he hadn't found anything yet, but he was certainly on to something. He needed to think the terms of his employment over once again, he didn't realize his findings could land square into the hands of a terrorist if he found anything at all. "But I could probably speed thins up if I had my research assistant, Zooey, here to help me work on potential leads. She's helped me work on the Eye research for a couple of years now." Why did I say that? He thought instantly, she could help sure, but he didn't want her here. It was far too dangerous.

A firm handshake was unexpected from such a beautiful woman, he didn't quite know what to think of it at first. He was used to the more typical dainty handshakes received from the women on Coruscant. Once they parted hands and she gave him permission to go ahead with his work he smiled politely and took a seat, laying his notebook on the panel he flipped through the pages before stopping somewhere midway through. His focus divided between Liya and his work, he smiled once again at her comment about her specialty, "Stealth huh? I'm more of a puzzle guy." He said jokingly, but truthfully, not taking his eyes away from his work.
Daniel knew what the question was getting at, and he expected it to come at some point, in their minds he was already a burden that would need looking after when they arrived at their destinations. He may have commented on it if it weren't for Jace's timely arrival to the cockpit.
The question however gave another track to his various trains of thought. He had been to the Outer Rim several times with his parents when he was younger, joining them on various digs on Tatooine and Endor, he had also conducted a few digs of his own on Honoghr and a few Mid Rim planets where he also spent time learning languages first hand from various native cultures. Though he never felt unsafe in any of his previous trips, not even Honoghr, it wasn't until the Jekk that he felt uneasy about any expedition. It was strange, on one hand he dreaded to see what was around the corner, and on the other he felt excited and anxious to get to the next step. Which was probably why he was so immersed in his work, it distracted him from one thing and got him closer to the other.
"I've been a few times, digs mostly." Daniel didn't like to lie, so he never did, he wasn't very good at it anyway. So when he said mostly it was entirely true, most times he had been to the Outer Rim was for archeological digs. The rest he was searching...

After a solid week of pouring over his notes and not talking to anyone short of the occasional nod as he walked to the caf machine, Daniel emerged from his makeshift study with a five day beard and a distinct 'deep-in-thought' expression on his face with his nose buried in his journal. He walked at a steady pace out of the kitchen, down the hall, to the lift, and took it up to the bridge level where he headed toward the cockpit. He needed another good look at that galaxy map to further connect the dots, so to speak, there was something that he was missing and that was the only logical place to find it since it was where he had first made his discovery.
As he arrived at the door he activated the panel and it opened with a swoosh, he was so engrossed in his journal that he didn't even notice Liya sitting there as he continued in and walked over to the map. As he stood there staring down at the map deep in thought noticed a very slight bit of movement out of the corner of his eye. It was just enough to draw his attention and he turned to see someone sitting in the pilot's chair looking at him. "G-ah!" He exclaimed as he nearly jumped out of his skin and tripped back and away from the woman as he fumbled his journal around in the air.
He caught his balance however and then his book before he looked at her with embarrassment written all over his face, his cheeks began to get warm and gain a dull red hue. "Wow. I-uh-well-you-I-um--" He nervously sputtered as he absently pointed to himself, then her, then back to himself, before leaning on the co-pilot's chair and taking a deep breath, "I-uh didn't know anyone was in here."
It of course didn't help matters that the woman in front of him was very beautiful, and he was sleep deprived, and he hadn't yet met her, and now he just wanted to crawl back under his rock. And now it was all of the sudden very hot in the ship. He shifted his weight to his back foot, "I can-" he unconsciously pointed with his thumb toward the door, "-unless you um-" he then gestured to her, "-I mean-err-I just-uh-"
He stopped himself to get some control on his embarrassment before it got any worse, What is wrong with me? He thought as he brought his hand up and rubbed his forehead with his eyes closed. He took two breaths and then one very deep one as he dropped his hand to his side, "Well now that I've officially embarrassed myself, I'm sorry, I didn't realize anyone was up here. I just need to use the galaxy map for a few moments, unless of course you're using it."
He smiled, waiting for a response before he realized that he hadn't met this woman yet and he hadn't introduced himself, "Oh, I'm Daniel." He reached out his hand to shake.

Jace I went ahead and put an end to our conversation so we could focus on one thread. I think it would be safe to assume that Daniel probably spent the majority of his time working on the notes he took in the cockpit and had little or no interaction with most of the crew. Anyway I'll post tonight and whoever wants to run into me can, if not then I'll find ways to occupy myself.
Edit: I'll come to the bridge, posting now.
Edit 2: Also I like that idea, the thing at the end of the post, it makes for good storytelling, good job.

Daniel quickly and excitedly sat in the co-pilot's chair, it was like the things children dream of, becoming an ace pilot and adventuring the galaxy. Daniel was practical enough to know that his boyish fantasy was just that and he had no real hopes of becoming a genuine pilot, but nonetheless the chance to try excited him. He glanced over the buttons, knobs, and switches again, still not knowing what any of then actually did and thought They should really label some of this stuff, but why would they? They already knew what all of these instruments did.
When Jace instructed him to flip the switches he did so all at once and hoped that there wasn't a particular order to which he was supposed to actually flip said switches. Then he simply watched what Jace was doing to get a better idea of what he should do if he were ever in a situation where he might have to operate this stuff.
Jace's question that followed wasn't unexpected, though Daniel didn't know quite how to answer it, "Just a few notes, theories really. But most people don't find the same things to be as interesting as I do, I guess we'll see." He awkwardly answered before falling silent and looking down at the panel for a few moments. He didn't like talking about his work to other people, nor did he know if he had actually found anything useful but he had a good feeling about it.
After a moment he looked tightened his grip on his journal and pushed off the seat and walked around the chair, "I should actually get going, I've got some other more pressing work to do." He smiled and shrugged before turning and walking toward the exit. About midway between the door and Jace he stopped and turned at the waist, "Oh and thank you for the lesson, looking forward to part two." He then turned back and made his way out the door to return to his makeshift study.

I do. When Mal kicks the bucket, she's staying that way. Not into the resurrection stuff. Me too, though I might come back as a force ghost if I get bored, Daniel is mildly force sensitive but is completely unaware of it. Anyway, Fel, I'll devote some time to writing up one of those bios for you if only to enhance details in everyone's writing, not that it needs it. I'd also like to read everyone else's because Daniel is very detail oriented and it would be nice to know all the details so I can show that more.

But as he finished with the scrubbing, he did know one thing: they were all on the same side now. As far as he knew, this 'Syndicate' was responsible for the Jekk and the trouble that had banded this group together in the last few days. Which reminded him that Daniel had been sent to the bridge, and Dante was not there. Placing the cleaning solution back where it belonged, he took one more cursory glance of the med-bay. No trace. He turned and stepped into the hallway, heading towards the bridge.
When he arrived at the bridge, he was greeted by an interesting scene. Daniel was leaning over the galaxy map, transfixed with it and some sort of calculations or logic-solving algorithm he was undoubtedly going over in his mind. Jace simply stood in the doorway for a second before sighing quietly and letting his shoulders drop. The anxiety the man had been displaying over the past few days seemed to have disappeared, and the smallest aura of peacefulness could be felt from him through the Force. Jace hadn't seen the doctor like this since Coruscant. Not wanting to disrupt the man, he simply crossed his arms and leaned against the door frame, admiring the man's ability to detach himself from the world and apply his mind to something he enjoyed practicing. Brilliant! Simply brilliant! Daniel thought to himself as he poured of the galaxy map, he of course was not referring to himself, but rather to the Baran Do. His gaze darted back and forth between the screen and his journal which he was doing calculations whilst sketching a slightly altered version of the map itself, he was also flipping a few pages back and jotting down several notes as they came to mind, thoughts and observations relating to his current project as well as some that he had been working on on the side. To most people his insistence on using a notebook and pencil was a primitive and outdated practice, but he enjoyed feel and reliability of it, technology sometimes took away some of his enjoyment of his job as it made things too easy at times, he liked the challenge. He paused briefly as he heard the door to the cockpit open and he noticed the faint shadow of someone in the doorway behind him, and of course the faint but distinct smell of cleaning solution that arrived a few seconds later. He continued his writings for another minute or two before placing his pencil in his page and closing his journal, he took one last, lingering look at the map before turning and looking around the rest of the cockpit and then to Jace. "I haven't gotten very far with prepping the ship, of course I didn't know where to begin and since no one was here--," he shrugged with his journal securely palmed in his right hand, "but I did manage to find something to do with myself while I was waiting on someone to get here."He waved his hand dismissively, "But that's neither here nor there." He walked over to a panel near the helm and crossed his arms tucking the hand with his journal under the opposite elbow and bringing his left hand but to rest on his chin as he studied the controls briefly. "Want to give me a hand?" He looked back at Jace with a humorous smile on his face, "I must have missed this class at the University." He said, mocking himself with a laugh as he turned back to the panel.

Also that being said I'd love to get everyone's opinion on Daniel's place with the crew, though bear in mind that my ultimate decision will be made in character regardless of what I or anyone would like to happen. It makes more sense that way, not forcing it because of OOC preference. I see it possibly being like Simon joining the crew of Serenity.
