Hey there, JvS. Been awhile, as usual.
I'm intrigued to know something. And intrigued enough to actually sign in and post it, something I haven't done in a long, long time.
I suppose it's a multi-part question.
With the recent (ok, recent spanning the last five years... a drop in the ocean as far as my lifetime, or even JvS for that matter) surge in popularity of the Mandalorian, it's pretty safe to say that general interest in the Space Western is alive and well, and that at least a portion of the galaxy is happy to see stories about average Joes, non-Force individuals. That stories that exist on a Micro level are interesting to many, and that empire-building and planet-control is not necessarily the be-all, end-all.
This was always the way I wrote on JvS. All that empire-building and political intrigue was fine and all, but I could never get into it, because I was always more concerned with the Micro stories. How to write a battle of the scale of a fleet of Star Destroyers, when I want to know the story of trooper TK989, dorsal gunner #24 on the fourth SD from the right (in formation.) Alas, that meant there was often a divide between the writers who wanted to be in control of their worlds, be the Jedi Council, or be the Supreme Ruler, etc.. and those of us who just wanted to write about someone making their way in the 'verse. (not my 'verse... I just live here...)
So with stories like the Mandalorian, and Andor... Star Wars IP's that are definitely about "the little guy," does that trickle down to this site? Are there once more, writers who are just looking for a group to smuggle, or exist in the underbelly of society? Underdogs?
I'm just curious.

I popped into a Facebook thread today, and ended up having a conversation for the first time in AGES with some of the old crew. So shout out to Karana Malora, Jace Stealer, Liya Tawaza, Dazac, Purps, Adrien Draykon, Constanza Vinti, Na'an... and all the others that worked with the Fel crew over the years. I wonder if you're still out there?

Fel regarded the smoking crater in the man's chest, laying in crumpled heap inside the entryway -- only now being dragged off by some unscrupulous characters (were they in the employ of the town, cleaning up messes? or just locals, thankful for the excitement and a new pair of boots?) "He sure doesn't have much of a sense of humour now." Fel looked back at the barkeep after Tarfang's barb about the hooch. There was no indication he was upset by the remark, or even that he had heard at all. "In my experience there's nothing funny about a Wookiee, unless they say so." He took another sip of the brake cleaner in front of him, and decided that enough was enough. Any more of that swill, and he'd be redecorating the 'fresher for an hour. "I'm a pilot, Captain Tarfang. Got me a ship, and the means to go where I will. Not much in the way of crew or work, presently, though..."

Fel glanced sidelong at the small creature that had just taken up residence beside him. Though he didn't exactly make eye contact, he nodded a noncommittal greeting just the same. As his neighbor's drink arrived, the outlander said, in a conversational yet quiet tone of voice that the Ewok would certainly hear, though with the volume the other patrons of the dive were creating, it was unlikely anyone else would. "All we need now is a Rodian and a Jedi to walk in, and I'm sure there's a joke in there, somewhere... an old man, a Ewok and..." Looking around himself once again, Fel took note of a group of three Rodians in a booth at the corner of the bar. "My mistake. All we need is a Jedi." He flipped a few credits on the counter to pay for the being's drink. "Name's Fel. Brings you here, stranger?"

But you know what they say about old men...
A young man knows the rules... an old man knows the exceptions. Old men are dangerous: it doesn't matter to them what is going to happen to the world. Young men think old men are fools; but old men know young men are fools. Young men preen. Old men scheme.
and, It is always in season for old men to learn.
I'm sitting at the bar in Chalmun's. Come have a drink. Maybe this old man will surprise you.

**augers a very deep hole, drops an iron pole in said hole, and cements it into place.**
**welds a D-ring onto the pole.**
**clips himself to the D-ring via a carabiner. Sits with his back to the pole.**
There. No way you can make me leave. it's permanent. Look -- it's in concrete. CONCRETE.

It had been -- as anyone who had done anything and left it behind, seemingly walking away from it for all time, only to eventually return through some sick twist of fate or circumstance -- a long time. He walked slowly, taking in his surroundings. He was an old man now. Or at least, he felt like an old man. Older by far than his forty-seven years should account for. Most passerby would see only the long hides he wore, and take little note. He was of no consequence. He knew this to be true, and at least for the moment, welcomed it. He was not cowled, nor did he wear goggles against the ever-present sand. For at least one of his eyes, it wouldn't matter. The sting of the sand, forever whipped up by the trade-winds that scoured the planet bare and raw, kept him focussed on his task, and soon enough he entered Chalmun's. He stood in the entryway. The last time he was here, all eyes turned to him. He had been a dangerous man then. Now, he looked more like a blind beggar than... well... that man he had once been.
It used to be the norm to find the darkest table in the farthest corner, but now, he sat at the bar. The barkeep didn't even take note. That was as it should be. If one thing had been shown to Galdaart Fel over his many years, it was that everything had a time, and a place. He'd wait.

Fel shook an uncomfortable sleep off, and got to grips with his surroundings. He was alone, on the bridge of the 'Blasphemy,' and something was obviously wrong. Or, more accurately, more wrong than before. There was a blanket around his shoulders, and frost covered most of the instruments. He could see his breath. Where. Where was he? He lurched upright, and made his way unsteadily in the low grav to the navacomp terminal. Rhen Var? Rhen Var? What in the seven hells? Several lights flashed on the instrument panels, and as a crew of one, shaking off the effects of an unscheduled drop from hyperspace, it took him a few minutes to check everything. Sure, the ship was a mess. He already knew that, and therefore ignored warnings upon warnings. Pressure losses, breach warnings, temperature alerts, power core instability, all of this was known and accepted. What interested Fel was the notice of other vessels in local proximity. That was unexpected. And perhaps a concern. There was comms traffic too, and he activated the bridge communicator.
Anyone out there?
Nope. No response to that. That's bait. Fel sat once more in the centre seat, wrapping his blanket around himself, and watched his breath plume out as he thought, and allowed the computer to do a sensor sweep. Let's see what we can see...

The ship dropped out of its hyperspace lane was unceremoniously kicked out of the blue swirl of hyperspace, destination: unknown, condition: about as well as could be expected, considering recent events. It was a good thing nobody was looking for them, and even better that they were flying so far off the beaten path that nobody in their right mind would go looking. Sublight engines were not engaged, because this departure was not wanted nor intended, and so the vessel began an uncontrolled end-over-end spin, slowly making a revolution every 90 seconds.
She was an ancient Corellian CR-90, which to the casual observer still bore a clear resemblance to her forebears. The remains of at least three sets of markings adorned her scarred flanks. There was significant wear, and years upon years of battle-scarring, but for even the most invasive scans, she was what she purported to be.
However, things were far from ordinary aboard this CR-90. Modified during the most recent flare-up of seemingly never-ending tensions between the good guys and the bad (you can insert Alliance / Rebels / Republic / Empire / First Order / Imperials / Remnant however you like...) to be a glorified battering ram, the 'Blasphemy,' as she was known to her crew (if you could call it a crew...) was a stripped-down, structurally-reinforced flying jerry-can which was purpose-built for a mission she never undertook. The weapon emplacements are mostly deleted or mocked up, and most of her interiors are gutted to make way for troops. As intended, she was meant to precision-jump inside a planetary blockade, and fly a one-way trip to the surface, dropping as many troops as possible. It would have been nearly a suicide mission, but thankfully, it hadn't come to that, and now the 'Blasphemy' hurtled through the black, seemingly a dead ship in the middle of nowhere...

I feel like this old mutt could whip that Pixy ass in a dogfight. Done it before. Do it again. I agree. Though I bet this young pup could give the old mutt a run for his credits. Do i hear the GDA rising from the ashes? I doubt it. That's been attempted before, as well. Fact is, there's nothing preventing a dogfight from being staged in the standard GBA, without need for a more specific GDA. Sounds like a challenge...
